It's officially the first day of winter! I wanted to celebrate by reviewing Hello Waffle's winter collection, the Snedronningen Collection! It's inspired by the fairytale Frozen is based off of, The Snow Queen, by Hans Christian Andersen. It was originally named The Wandering Oaken's Trading Post Collection, but had to be changed for copyright reasons. I'll add the original names of the shadows as well for informational purposes. I originally ordered this set months ago, from the birthday sale, so forgive me if I don't quite remember the exact details about my order. Also, because the shop is currently closed, I don't have direct links to the products. I will try to add those after the shop reopens in January.
About - Hello Waffle is an indie cosmetics company specializing in beautiful eyeshadow collections, blushes, made by Christine, the owner. Hello Waffle is based in Canada, and currently has collections inspired by Fringe, famous musical composers, cats/literature, and a collection celebrating reaching 1000 Facebook likes. She also offers seasonal fairytale inspired collections that can be purchased in the season they are inspired by.
Shipping - I made this order way back in August during the birthday sale, and if I remember correctly the turnaround time was fairly high. All I know was that I ordered August 29th, and it was delivered October 11th. The tracking for this no longer works, so I don't know how many days it took after it shipped. I remember something vaguely like around 2 weeks from Canada to California. It was a large order over $70, so I had tracking for it as well.
Product Size - I purchased sample bags of this collection, and then depotted them into jars for photography purposes. Hello Waffle also carries mini (halfling) jars, as well as full size jars. You can only purchase sample bags of an entire collection, and not individual shades, as it's just not cost effective to offer them.
Free Samples - I think because my order was so large I had something like 3-4 free mini jars in addition to my order. I typically receive mini jars or sometimes full size jars as my free samples. I've mostly made large orders, so I'm not sure what smaller orders receive. Very generous with the samples.
All eyeshadows are swatched over Too Faced Shadow Insurance primer.
Bae (Fresh Lacquer) - "Dark stormy copper with silver sparkle."
I would describe this more as a dark medium brown with silver sheen and sparkles. A beautiful neutral to go with any look.
Chinese Puzzle (Coronation Day) - Green teal shimmer."
This shade looked more like a muted forest green with a silvery sheen.
Eternity (Eternal Winter) - "Cool dark stormy gray with silver sparkle."
This shade had a really strong silver sheen as well, I like dark gray shadows, I need to wear them more.
Gerda (For the First Time in Forever) - "Lively medium purple shimmer."
This shade looked like it had almost a green silver sheen to it. I would say this shade was more of a muted pink purple.
Hobgoblin (The Love Experts) - "Lively olive green with silver and green sparkle."
This shade looked like a emerald green with a green sheen, and green sparkles.
Kai (Hans) - "Reddened copper with green, silver and gold sparkles."
This was my favorite shade of the collection, for obvious reasons. If you don't know, I have kind of a red eyeshadow obsession. It's a fiery coppery orange with red undertones. It morphs depending on how much shadow you use, but you can definitely see the silver and gold sparkles.
Magic Mirror (Arendelle) - "Medium gray leaning purple with silver sparkle."
This shadow wasn't very pigmented, but it's mostly a silver shade, with just a touch of purple in it. This also has a strong silver sheen.
North Pole (Don't Let It Show) - "Rich dark navy blue with a hint of teal and silver sparkle."
I'd call this more of a sapphire blue with silver sparkles. Very beautiful shade, I love jewel tones.
Red Shoes (Anna) - "Carnation magenta with green sparkle."
Definitely a magenta shade with purple sheen and green sparkles.
Snow Bees (Olaf) - "White with silver shimmer that has a hint of orange sheen."
This looked more like a shimmery cream shade than white. You can definitely see the bit of orange it has in it.
Snow Queen (The Queen) - "Rich purple shimmer."
This was a purple shadow with a blue purple sheen to it. Very metallic, not much sparkle.
Snowflakes (Here I Stand) - "Icy light blue with lots of silver sparkle."
Icicle blue with a silvery blue sheen and silver sparkles. I would love to pair this with North Pole.
Summertime (Hit in the Heart) - "Light creamsicle orange with silver shimmer."
This was probably my least favorite shade of the whole collection, but I'm not big on orange shadows. This one also wasn't completely mixed together, there was a bit of red pigment not blended in.
Overall, I like a few of the shades from this collection, but I could probably take or leave most of them. Kai was definitely my favorite, but that's because I think it's the most unique of the bunch. Because there are two greens, two purples, two blues, three silvery shades, and even two oranges. Just a lot of repetition for me personally. I would rather an eyeshadow collection be smaller and have fewer similar colors. But some shades would pair well together, so I can always appreciate that. I wouldn't say this collection is necessary to purchase unless you're a big fan of Frozen, or The Snow Queen fairytale.
Customer Service - I remember having a problem with this order, which was one of the collections I ordered, not this one, I received sample sizes instead of the minis I ordered. Christine replied quickly and sent me out the correct items. Customer service I've received has always been top notch.
Availability - Currently the shop is closed, but it will reopen in January with this collection up for sale. This is a seasonal collection and the full set and all shades will only be offered December 21st-March 20th. The rest of the year, only the shades Kai, Magic Mirror, and Snow Bees will be offered.
Overall Satisfaction - My favorite shade was Kai, but I didn't find this collection to be overwhelmingly exciting. Definitely not necessary to buy unless you are a fan of it's inspiration material.
