Sixteen92 is a company I've been enjoying more and more recently, so for today's Indies of the Week I wanted to review the scent Black Sugar. Both as a lotion, and a perfume! I received the perfume as a free sample with one of my orders, and the lotion was given to me as a gift. I'm not typically into really sugary scents, so testing this scent was a bit of an adventure for me!
About - Sixteen92 is a newer indie company, owned by Claire and based in Texas, that specializes in perfume. They also recently introduced their bath and body product line, including shower gel and hand & body lotion.
Product Size - The lotion comes in either a 1oz sample jar, or a 4oz full size jar. The perfume can be purchased in a 2ml sample vial, 5.5ml full size bottle, or a 10ml roll on. In my photo, I actually have a smaller vial for my perfume because it was a free sample in one of my orders, it's a 1ml vial.
Black Sugar Lotion - "Spun brown sugar, red berries, vanilla and tonka bean absolute dance with a sprinkle of dirt, a swirl of cauldron smoke, and a drop of bittersweet cocao absolute."
As a lotion, this mostly smells like brown sugar to me. I've mentioned I like the lotion formula from Sixteen92 before. It's not too strong, which is good. And it's absorbed quickly.
Black Sugar Perfume - "Brown Sugar, Red Berries, Caramel, Vanilla, Tonka Bean, Dirt, Cauldron Smoke, Cocao Absolute"
As a perfume, this scent is much more nuanced. I get the red berries, and the caramel and vanilla. Definitely a bit of the darker notes, though I wouldn't be able to name them just by smelling it. It's not as overwhelmingly sweet as the lotion, it does have a few notes that smell like they could turn weird with certain skin chemistries, so I would recommend trying a sample before committing to full size. This almost smells like a cleaning product on me at one point, but nothing like that the rest of the time. That's skin chemistry for you. It doesn't have much silage, but also doesn't last very long on me. Probably a few hours at most, but caramel and vanilla type notes have a tendency to linger all day for me sometimes, so usually that will hang around even after the rest is gone.
And here's the texture of the Sixteen92 lotion formula. It's very light, and absorbs quickly. I find that if I dip one finger in, that gives me enough product for both of my hands. It is kind of "wet", but after a few minutes your skin absorbs it all. It is sort of the same consistency of soft peaks whipped egg whites.
Availability - Both of these products in the Black Sugar scent are still available. They are permanent products, so they will be around for a while.
Recommendation - If you like sweet, sugary scents, Black Sugar would be perfect for you. I like the perfume a little more than the lotion, but I do like the general sugary scent of the lotion as well.
